Prolific panto writer Alan McHugh pens his magic once again for the loons and quines of Aberdeen with this raucous production of Peter Pan.

This is a writer and cast who know their audience and have been working together for a number of years and it shows in this seamless production.

Comedy trio Alan McHugh as Dame Maggie Celeste, Elaine C Smith as The Magical Mermaid and Jordan Young as Smee take the performance to the audience, engaging them with warmth and humour. Alan McHugh’s trademark Doric wordplay and teasing innuendo, combined with Elaine C Smith’s quips and asides to the audience turns this pantomime into comedy gold.

Big well-known musical numbers with lyrics changed for local reference are performed to hilarious effect by the doyen of Scottish panto, Elaine C Smith. There’s a timely comic gaff as Smee takes a tumble pulling down the cloth revealing the backstage goings on: a nod to the technical crew on this talented, confident production team.

The production falls into a tale of two parts: the familiar story of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and the Darlings plays second fiddle to the outrageous goings-on around them, while a 3D interlude disappoints, adding little to the overall production.

High production levels with flawless musical direction, choreography and lighting sees Aberdeen’s panto prowess continue to fly high with this year’s Peter Pan.
